A Game About Collaboratively Navigating Widespread Disaster
Want to connect with family or friends at holiday gatherings, but also avoid the more awkward or divisive topics? This game is engaging for kids and adults. It’s free to download and fairly simple to set up. It’s a cooperative game in which you win or lose as a group. The game helps you think thru realistic scenarios regarding what you would need currently for emergency preparedness in your area, as you figure out how to survive the situations you encounter in the gameplay. Give everyone a reason to put down their phones. Check it out here: https://sites.google.com/view/politibanter/termination
The game doesn’t make use of the political compass format, but because this article series does, here’s the emergency preparedness topic organized by quadrant.
Large-scale Catastrophic Disaster Refuge Plans for the U.S. Political Compass
Those focused on short term risks, thinking that on the larger scale everything will carry on as usual, will consistently be correct, until they are wrong. Taleb (2019) in Black Swan explains the psychological comfort people develop as they see short term consistency, and why the same people who prepare for rain often fail to prepare for hurricanes. Extreme events come along periodically. We know they will come, but we keep building new buildings because it makes sense for the short term.
Similarly, death is certain, but still only 33% of Americans have a legal will (Caring.com, 2022). An advance directive for medical care is also often neglected. This holiday season, make sure you and those you care about ruin the festive mood by discussing your death. Start by searching the internet with the terms (“advance directive” or “living will”) AND [name of your state or province].
